Dr Andrew Powell – CEO, asia biobusiness
focussed on agricultural biotechnology in Asia-Pacific since its introduction, providing expert bespoke consulting, advocacy and training to a range of public and private sector clients.
Dr Powell graduated from the University of Edinburgh with honours in Biology and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Calgary, Canada. He has held research and academic positions at the University of Guelph, Canada, the National Institute for Health Sciences in Tokyo, and Tsukuba, Japan and the National University of Singapore.
Dr Andrew Powell is a longtime Asia resident, living and working in the region for over 30 years. He has been consulting in the region since 1994. As an independent consultant his clients have included Syngenta, Agrium, CIDA, Enterprise Ireland, GTZ, CropLife Asia, and the Canadian Government, primarily working in agriculture, agri-food and agbiotechnology.
He is currently CEO of Asia BioBusiness Pte. Ltd. – a Singapore based consulting group co-founded in 2005 with Professor Paul Teng. The company advances the agriculture, food and biotechnology agendas of their clients in East Asia, ANZ and also Latin America.
As CEO of Asia BioBusiness Pte. Ltd., he has overseen projects for Bayer, Grow Asia – a World Economic Forum initiative to empower small farmers (a primer for industry to work with farmer organisations); Tate and Lyle PLC (open innovation in food ingredients); APEC (food security policy); USDA (regulatory policy in APEC on agbiotech); the US State Department (food security outreach); UNEP-GEF, Ministry of Environment, India (strategic communication consulting on biosafety of GMOs); the North American Biotechnology Initiative in Mexico (risk communication in novel food technology); the Asia Productivity Organisation (training in commercialisation agri-food technology); the National Innovation Agency, Bangkok (rice innovation); and projects for Monsanto, Syngenta and Dupont.
He has also coordinated successful courses in the Commercialisation of Agbiotechnology, Risk Communication and Strategic Communication in partnership with ISAAA, SEARCA, ACIAR, BIOTEC Thailand, and Biotech Corp, Malaysia.
Dr Powell sits on the Alberta Government’s Research and Innovation Advisory Committee and on the Advisory Boards of the Rice Bowl Index and of the Scientific American World View publication.
